Lifestyle vs. Time In The Chair
May 5, 2010
So here’s the scenario. A client decides it’s time to take a break from her extensions…..wants a nice, short, “cooler” cut for the summer months. She wants less time in the salon since the warm weather brings more opportunity for family fun. Short hair’s supposed to be easier….to style and maintain….right? Plus…how about all those cute, spiky do’s….so youthful….brings out the eyes and all. Well, it’s all fine and dandy…if you actually have the time and talent to STYLE that short hair!!!! And if you don’t live where it rains 8-9 months out of the year, melting your gelled up, hair-sprayed spikes into a very unflattering helmet. Yikes!
So, before you go chopping off all those long, lovely locks…..yes, the one’s you’ve so patiently grown out…..the ones that now perfectly blend with your extensions….you might want to consider a few things.
There are a lot of women out there that have beautifully shaped faces, heads and necks…who can chop off ALL their hair and still look gorgeous. (Jamie Lee, Halle…you rock!) You know, “God made a few perfect heads…and the rest…well, he put hair on them.” Most of us NEED a little somethin’ somethin’ to fem us up. Short hair can be ”hot” and sophisticated, but you still have to possess the skill to STYLE it. Yeah, believe it…..those cute, messy, all-over-the-place anti-coifs take time…..along with a good eye for balance & detail to create. They rarely “just happen” on their own. (Plus…PRODUCT people…..got to use some PRODUCT! )
Now, consider this. Just because your salon time is cut in half….doesn’t mean your morning routine will be. If anything….there’s a good chance that it’ll take longer to get “the look”….and it may have to be done, start to finish…..everyday. It really depends the texture of your hair, your age and shape of your face. Nothing beats a short wash and wear for ease and saving time…but honestly, how many women can actually pull that one off? Maybe in your teens and twenties….and again…with the perfect bone structure. I love a good shag haircut (yeah…the original wash-n-wear)….but for 90% of us…it’s still requires workin’ it!
Many clients have told me that having longer, extended hair actually helps minimize their daily efforts. They can get away with less heat styling, especially once all their natural hair is long enough to seamlessly blend with their extension hair. If anything, you MAY be able to go a day more between washing and styling. That’s because a good quality extension hair will hold up longer when properly maintained. And it doesn’t mean the hair has to be down to your waist. Sometimes, just longer layers….or something bob-ish (long, short, textured or not) can be easier to manage on a daily basis. They can offer a wider variety of styling choices and still look pretty after the hat comes off. And if necessary, they can be “put” up for a sophisticated change in style.
So, if you first chose getting extensions because you ”needed” them…for whatever reason…..you NEED to consider all those reasons before loosing them and chopping off all your “hard work”…..simply to spend less time in the salon(?) Your “short cut” may not really save you time in the long run. You just may find yourself throwing a flat iron across the bathroom in fits of frustration….wondering, “Why, why, why…..why did I do this….again?”
