I found this story rather humorous….and enlightening. A Monkey Barrz client told me about a recent extension client she’d been doing for a while. It seems this client’s husband wasn’t exactly thrilled with her latest “do”. It’s not that he hated it… just wasn’t his favorite, so he never really complimented her on it. Problem was, the style actually worked great for her face and totally fitted her lifestyle. So….what to do? what to do?

The answer was in the QUALITY of hair they were using. They took the old extensions out, did the touch up with a higher quality, 100% European hair and voila’…..he loved it. Nothing else changed. Same number of extensions, same colors, same cut….but this time he told her how great it looked! (Hmmm, and we think they’re not paying attention….)

This is a great example of exploring options and finding out exactly what will make your client happy….AND what will work best for them. Sometimes people don’t really know what they’re “objecting” to….maybe they like the idea, but something is just “off”. That’s when we need to bump up our game a little to really bring it home.

Methods for extending the hair vary and it seems there’s a new one everyday! Many extension artists will master several techniques. This is to more adequately service the different and particular needs of their clients. When choosing a suitable method, many factors should be taken into consideration. The “finished look” may be your biggest concern, but longevity, possible hair damage and ease of care are just as important.

Common methods are pole weaving, braid weaving, interlock, weft bonding, half braids, micro knotting and the hot glue technique. Using hot melt adhesive is sometimes known as “fusion” or “bonding”. This can be a little confusing at first (which is one reason for the lengthy dissertation). but don’t worry, we’re here to help you sort it all out.

Example: It used to be taboo in the hairdressing industry to call bleach “bleach”. Salon etiquette stated that the term “lightener” should be used, as it sounded softer, therefore more appealing to the client. Come on……we all know it’s bleach! If you need bleach to get the look you want, then hey….use bleach!

This terminology thing spreads out to many other chemical services just so you won’t shy away from them. That’s why they should only be done by professionals. It’s not the products you should be wary of, it’s the person using them.

Your other alternatives to a “glue” method usually require some degree of tension. (This includes synthetic hair attachment as well.) Not always, but often, these methods can be severely uncomfortable for someone not used to wearing their hair tightly braided, knotted, or bound in tiny subsections. Imagine that, plus the extra weight of the extension hair. Then again, if neither of these sound appealing, there are always clip-on additions, wiglets, falls, etc. which can be fun and very versatile. All methods of hair extensions take an initial adjustment time. For some, tension methods work great. Other people can only tolerate the non-tension application that glue methods can offer.

The whole point here is don’t be fooled by words. Glue is glue, no matter what it’s called.

I was just so inspired by his level of commitment to his work and his clientele…and his lack of ego around being a “hair extension artist”. Bottom line is….we need to work, and people still need to look their best. So, if that means everyone pitching in to do what they can to make it through this mess, then I’m all for it.

And, by no means am I advocating workin’ it for nothing. We’ve come so far in this industry and I believe we deserve every penny our aching feet and backs have earned us….but sometimes it IS about going the extra mile, or throwing in something special to keep our clients. Right now, people are making hard choices and in some places it’s tougher than others. I’m just saying….maybe think outside of the box for a while…consider some options….see what you can do that’s a win-win for you and your clients. This time will pass…and hopefully, we’ll all be a lot stronger, wiser and “evolved” because of it.

Well, fortunately you can push the envelope somewhat when you use Monkey Barrz to add or subtract color from you client’s hair. And, as we all know so well…getting red to actually stay put in someone’s previously bleach-blond hair is tough, to say the least. Adding some lowlights with high quality hair extensions insures their reds and beautiful browns will be there come next touch-up.
Even short hair can lose all those rich, multi-colors we’ve so painstakingly foiled in…and it’s very frustrating to see the fruits of our labors return completely washed out due to things beyond our control. So, for that client with super fine hair (who might also spend a lot of time outdoors) and just cannot hold color….consider low-lighting with hair extensions and nix the chemical wear and tear.
